Don't Call Me That book cover with blindfolded girl

Don't Call Me That

by Lucky Rose

Don’t Call Me That is a coming-of-age memoir about growing up inside a family history where love and violence, loyalty and betrayal, truth and invention were rarely easy to separate. Moving between the strange, half-wild world of a childhood in the Georgia woods and the death that forces an adult daughter to begin excavating everything she thought she understood, Lucky Rose reconstructs a family story told differently depending on who was doing the telling. This is not a memoir about discovering that everything you were told was a lie. It is about discovering that several contradictory things can be true at once. Darkly funny, intimate, and unwilling to sand down the uncomfortable edges, Don’t Call Me That is a story about memory, inheritance, chosen family, and what happens when you finally become old enough to interrogate the mythology of your own childhood.

Made by a real artist. Her name is Yuliia Hanyk. From Pennsylvania.

PUBLISHING WITH PERSONALITY

YOUR STORY, SERIOUSLY

HANDS ON, START TO FINISH

I opened Lucky Makes Books because I love books, and I love the people who write them. I wanted to build the kind of publishing company I would want to bring my own book to, somewhere an author can know the person reading their manuscript, be part of what happens to it, and trust that their story is being cared for by someone who genuinely gives a damn about books.

Expect questions, honest feedback, plenty of ideas, and someone who will get genuinely invested in your story. I want to know why you made the choices you made, what you’re trying to say, and what you want your book to become. I’m not interested in sanding away everything strange or personal about your writing just to make it fit on a shelf. I want to find what makes your book yours and help you make more of it. I’ll challenge you, disagree with you, laugh with you, occasionally pester you about a deadline, and be in your corner all the way to the finished book.

You shouldn't have to be famous before someone takes your writing seriously. Every author I publish gets this level of care.
